I hope to write about anything and everything that comes into my mind, as long as it is in good taste. I hope to communicate effectively and stimulate thought and conversation. I can't wait to get started!

Newsboys not to be missed
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 4/9/2007

Even though I am a Christian, I do not attend many Christian concerts. To be honest, sometimes they are a bit too sappy and mellow for my taste.

When I bought tickets in late December for the newsboys concert, however, I had a feeling I would not be disappointed. Though the group is not considered hard core, they are definitely a rock n' roll band. And though they sing about God, Jesus, Heaven, and Hell, they are not for one minute preachy, condescending, or dull.

My friend, Lori, and I took our daughters, Faith and Allie, to the concert on Saturday night, Easter Eve. It was exactly what I needed to jump-start my Sunday celebration. We were fortunate enough to be in the second row, but unfortunate enough to be right in front of the largest speakers I had ever seen!

Right away the pensive part of me began to worry, not only about my daughter's 9 year old ears, but also my 43-year old hearing. Eventually we scored three sets of ear-plugs (Lori did not want them) and I felt much more at ease.

Usually there is one warm-up band before the main event, but the newsboys had two groups warm them up: Stellar Kart and Kutless, both decidedly more hard-core than the newsboys. I had never heard of either group, but liked them both enough to download many of their songs the very next day.

The newsboys were definitely the best of all three bands, in my opinion, and their show was incredibly upbeat and moving. There were times when lead singer Peter Furler spoke to the crowd about difficult times in his life which was moving and inspiring. But for the most part, the group rocked the DU Arena for about an hour and a half, coming back for one encore.

Speaking of Furler, he alone is worth the price of admission. He looks like the late Michael Hutchens of INXS, except with a shaved head, and is one of the most fascinating, captivating people I have ever seen. There is something about his mannerisms and persona that draw you in. Though there are three other band members, I simply could not take my eyes off of him. He is mesmerizing. And what a voice!

The group, which has been around since, hails from Australia and has sold over 6 million copies of its new CD, GO. If you are a fan of rock music, you should see the group the next time they are in town. I know I will.
