The Write Words
I hope to write about anything and everything that comes into my mind, as long as it is in good taste. I hope to communicate effectively and stimulate thought and conversation. I can't wait to get started!

Every year, it starts earlier and ealier. You see Christmas decorations in stores before Thanksgiving. The emails about Christmas sales begin arriving in October. In my neighborhood, people are already putting up their Christmas lights and plastic snowmen and santas.
And my kids ask earlier and earlier each year about when they will be able to open their presents. Our tradition used to be that my husband and I let the kids open their gifts on Christmas Eve. Several years ago we let them open one or two gifts the day before Christmas Eve. Then all of a sudden all their gifts were opened by, like, the 21st!
So a brilliant idea came to me last week (one of many I have had lately, I might add). I decided that we should let the kids open their gifts as soon as they all arrived in the mail and if that happened before Thanksgiving, then so be it. After talking to my husband about it, he decided it was a brilliant idea, too!
Tonight the last gift should arrive via UPS, so you know what the night will be like at my house. Wild, frantic, hysteria. And the kids will be ecstatic, too.
Why did I decide to make this out-of-the-box decision? Because I thought it would be nice, for a change, to actually focus on Christmas at Christmas. Perhaps if the kids get all of their present-opening, video game-playing out of their systems now, then maybe we can focus on the true meaning of Christmas this year. As Christians, we believe it is Christ's birthday (thus the name Christ-mas).
Maybe we can bake cookies and read the Christmas story and just chill for a while. What a novel concept.
We will see if my plan works or backfires. Either way, it will still be worth it. I will let you know how it goes.
