Blog Entry 53 of 66 The Write Words
I hope to write about anything and everything that comes into my mind, as long as it is in good taste. I hope to communicate effectively and stimulate thought and conversation. I can't wait to get started!

Memories of my mom
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 9/14/2007

A few weeks ago my mom and I took a short vacation. When I was a kid, our family took numerous car trips to cool places. I have fond memories of those times. The best part, I recall, was eating out and swimming.

My mom and I have taken only a handful of trips together since I've been an adult. I am not sure why we have not traveled more frequently. But I do know this: the times, they are a changing, mostly because my mom is.

You see, mom has gone through a lot in the past six years, starting with a breast cancer diagnosis and, most recently, huge problems with my brother, Scott. Because of these and other trials, my mom has grown a lot. And I do not mean her waist size!

The size of her heart is expanding, as is her ability to see herself - and others - in a more realistic light.

Mom needed a vacation. Since I work for Frontier Airlines, it was within my ability to whisk her away for a quick weekend trip. We traveled to Phoenix, one of my favorite places, and stayed at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs, a divine resort nestled in the hills of Phoenix. I had hoped mom would adore the place as much as I; she did.

Mom and I made memories on this trip that I will cherish always. We laughed and we cried; we delighted in dining at a five-star restaurant that overlooks the city while lightning danced in the sky. We sipped drinks and dined via poolside. We stayed up late, talking. In essence, we enjoyed what we both desperately needed: a little downtime, away from the reality that is life.

In the end, I learned things about mom, things I never knew. I realized she is strong in ways I am not and probably never will be. I realized she is more fun to be with than I thought. I learned she is more human that I thought. I realized we can be friends. But more than anything, I learned how blessed I am to have her as my mom.
