Blog Entry 24 of 68 The Write Words
I hope to write about anything and everything that comes into my mind, as long as it is in good taste. I hope to communicate effectively and stimulate thought and conversation. I can't wait to get started!

Bad karma or bad planning?
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 1/11/2007

A month or so ago, my car experienced technical difficulties on the way home from the Andrea Boccelli concert. I wrote about the experience at YourHub.com. No big deal; everyone has car problems at one time or another. Mine just happened to occur after a mountain-top experience; I had to be brought back down to Earth, I would guess.

Since I was left without a car for a day and a half, and needed to get to work on Monday, I called a co-worker who happily agreed to give me and my two beautiful children a ride to work and school (one in the same, as I work at my kids' school). "No problem" she said. "Great," I said.

A little over half-way to work, my friend, Lani, looked at me and said, oh, no. Still a little gun-shy from the night before last, I panicked and said, what???? She replied that she thought she was running out of gas. Well, there was little to no thought in it: shewas running out of gas and we were now coasting to school: us, our collective four children, and my fourth grade daughter's class pet, a lizard.

I couldn't believe it. First, my car is on the fritz and I have to be rescued in a seedy part of town by my husband, late at night. Now, the person who is supposed to be rescuing me from it all? She neglects to put gas in her car. It was simply bad Karma, I told her; bad car karma. It was folowing me around, clinging to my body. Eventually the car died and we all ended up walking the rest of the way to school. We laughed about it, but being the contemplative sort that I am, I began to wonder. Was it really me? Or just all concidence?

As is often the case, I was awakened from my pondering by more than one student at school that asked me if I always walked to school. Puzzled, I looked at them, wondering why they would ask such a thing. So I said, Why do you ask? They then replied, we saw you walking this morning. Ugh!

I told this story to several people. Most of them laughed. Some scoffed at my idea that it was bad Karma. My husband, not wishing to add insult to injury, did not say what I know he was thinking: not bad karma, bad planning, as he so often likes to say. Others would just say that is the way things go. One friend, Amy, even went as far to say that maybe it was Lani's bad Karma, not mine! I liked that response.

In the end, it really doesn't matter why it happened. Everyone survived the ordeal, including the lizard, as far as I know. Lani and I created a memory together. That is one thing I am very sure of. And for that, I am thankful.

But if I ever ask you for a ride somewhere, you might want to think twice before letting me in your car!
