I hope to write about anything and everything that comes into my mind, as long as it is in good taste. I hope to communicate effectively and stimulate thought and conversation. I can't wait to get started!

Finding acceptance in a new book club
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 2/9/2007

Weeks ago I posted a blog here about how I was kicked out of the first book club I had ever been a part of (Jan. 11). Many at YourHub.com posted encouraging comments; I am grateful for all of those who did. Their thoughtful words gave me the comfort and strength needed to get past the event.

Not only can I laugh about the situation now, I allow others to joke about it with me. After all, in the big realm of life, who the heck cares, really? And I do believe that what does not kill you makes you stronger. I have learned from the experience and moved past it. It's all good.

Several people suggested that my friend, Amy and I, who I mentioned in the blog, start our own book club. Since Amy was already a member of a book club she enjoyed immensely, she invited me to join her. After assuring me I would find acceptance with those in her club, I timidly ventured out in faith, attending for the first time last night.

I am happy to report it went well.

The people were fantastic. They were warm and welcoming, much more so than my previous book club members. Maybe it's because there were two men in attendance. Men bring a sense of calm and reassurance. I think they are easier to deal with most of the time, unless, of course, you are married to one or the sister of one.

No time was wasted; after quick introductions, we began to converse about the book we read, The Kite Runner (an excellent book, by the way). No one dominated the conversation; everyone took their turn. People were respectful and caring toward one another. I, of course, was on my best behavior, not wanting to offend anyone, even though they assured me I would not be booted out of their club.

In my previous book club experience, I sensed power struggles and control issues among some of the women. In this club, there was none of that. I felt relieved. I felt at home.

That is not to say I was not a bit intimidated, not only because I feared I may say the wrong thing, but because those in this group are extremely intelligent, well-read people. That scares me because I suffer from the disease of comparison. When I compared myself to these people, I felt small and insignificant. I want to emphasize that nothing they did made me feel this way; on the contrary, they did their best at welcoming me with open arms. My insecurities are mine alone; I don't want them changing who they are on my account.

Being around people who make us stretch a bit is a positive thing, too. As Amy said, hanging out with people like them makes you want to grow and be better yourself. In other words, you will become like those you associate with.

I'm counting on it.

"Being around people who make us stretch a bit is a positive thing, too." Funny. Gravity does that to me.
