Blog Entry 37 of 66 The Write Words
I hope to write about anything and everything that comes into my mind, as long as it is in good taste. I hope to communicate effectively and stimulate thought and conversation. I can't wait to get started!

Potty mouth vs. pap smear
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 4/2/2007

We went at it again the other night, my three good friends and I. Every time we get together, there are loads of laughs, raucous conversations, and heated debates. Somehow we always end up talking about four-letter words, in one way or another.

Last Saturday night was no different. Only this time, we ended up talking about health issues as well. One of my friends talked about her breast cancer scare and how she put off having an ultrasound after her physician advised her to have one. Finally, after much prodding from me, she did and everything turned out fine, thank God.

After she told her story, my other two friends chimed in about how they haven't had the tests they are supposed to have because they hate the doctor. Since I am me, I threw my hands up in the air for emphasis and shouted, "Oh, Oh. We think it is horrible to say a bad word, but we don't go to the doctor to get our annual pap smears? So we die, leaving our kids without a mother, but at least we have a clean mouth!"

They got the point. I am going to be on them like flies on honey now, not because I want to be a pain in the butt, but because I love them. And cancer can happen to anyone, even my friend who says she is "healthy." Most people are healthy until cancer strikes, right? I mean, they didn't have it, and then they did. It seems logical to me.

The other point I wanted them to see is that we can be so inconsistent in our beliefs. Yes, cuss words are bad, but they are only words. We have defined them as bad and so therefore they are. Of course, there are hundreds of wonderful words out there that are so much better to use and we should, if we can.

But there is also a world of hurting people who probably couldn't care less if we utter an expletive or two if we simply help them or love them in same way. It is all relative, after all.

Do I want my kids to cuss? No, I do not. But if they cuss a little, but are respectful to me and their father, do well in school, and are healthy, is it that big of a deal, in the big realm of things? I cussed like a sailor when I was a teenager, yet I managed to graduate from college and live a productive life.

When I contemplate this stuff, it is good. Not only does it provide something to write about, it also causes me to reflect on the inconsistent thoughts and actions in my own life. Sadly, there are many. But not as many as there used to be.

And that's a start, right?

Once when I was about seven, I overheard my mother say "stirrups" in a phone conversation. Later that morning when we left the house, I was convinced we were on our way to get a horse. Imagine my disappointment when we arrived at her OB/GYN's office.

Nice. My friends and I are kind of the same as far as cursing, only without the pap smear discussion!
