Blog Entry 59 of 63 The Write Words
I hope to write about anything and everything that comes into my mind, as long as it is in good taste. I hope to communicate effectively and stimulate thought and conversation. I can't wait to get started!

Learning to drive, learning to let go
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 2/25/2008

I have a 15 year old son. Years ago, when he was a baby, I lamented the fact that one day he would grow up and drive. I think I worried about that more than anything else. Now the day is here and I can't hardly believe it.

Joseph has had his learner's permit for nearly two months and I have not once gotten in the car with him. This is mostly by choice, although my husband was quite adamant that he go with Joseph on his first outings in the car. It did not take any insistence on his part; I was totally compliant.

Joseph has always been responsible and I have no reason to doubt that he will continue to be after he gets his license. Still, I worry about other crazy drivers and an environment that his father and I did not face when we learned to drive. We, after all, grew up in Longmont, not exactly a big city and certainly not a place where one encountered traffic jams on a daily basis. When I think about my son driving in Denver trafffic, enduring a 25 minute commute just to get to high school, I cringe. And then I pray.

I know there is nothing I can do, short of moving to a small town or deserted island, that can prevent the anxiety I feel. Even then, I would still have to deal with the thing that every parent eventually deals with: letting go. And that is never easy, regardless of where you receive your mail.

So as Joseph learns to drive, which is a scary thing for him (my husband likes to ease his anxiety by reminding Joseph that even his mother got her driver's license!), I am learning things as well. I am learning that life goes by way too fast. I am learning that sometimes it really is possible to love someone too much. And I am learning to let go, one agonizing minute at a time.

And I am sure of only one thing: my son will master driving long before I master letting go.
