Parents kidnap bride-to-be
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 12/8/2006

Did you hear about the parents who kidnapped their 21 year-old daughter to prevent her from marrying a man they believed to be "evil and wicked and abusive?" No kidding, this is a true story.

The story begins in Provo, Utah, when Julianna Redd Myers' parents kidnapped her on August 4, the day before she was to be married to Perry Myers. Lemuel and Julia Redd picked her up under the guise of going to shop for religious clothing for her wedding. Needless to say, they never got around to the "shop 'til you drop" part.

They ended up traveling to, you guessed it, our fair state, ending up in Grand Junction for a night. The next day they returned to Provo.

I don't know about you, but this story strikes me as ridiculously funny and mildly entertaining. I am never really surprised anymore about what happens in our crazy world.

I may get into trouble for saying this, but I actually empathize with the parents in this situation. Being a mother of a daughter myself, and knowing full well how evil some men can be, I could possibly make the same decision. And part of me wishes that my parents would have taken a hard-core stance with some of the men that I dated over the years. I mean, I dated some real turkeys and my parents never once called any of them evil!

The Redds pleaded not guilty on Dec. 6 and were ordered to stand trial after their daughter's testimony. Apparently there may be a plea bargain in the case, which would be a godsend, I think. A trial date has not been set for the second-degree kidnapping charge, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. What a travesty of justice it will be if these parents see one day of prison time, especially when considering how many hardened criminals run free on our city streets.

Perhaps the parents were a bit misguided in the way they tried to discourage their daughter to marry a man they did not approve of. Perhaps they will turn out to be right about the man, in the end. Sometimes parents see things their children do not. At least her parents care. That is more than what can be said of so many parents.

Love proved stronger than blood in this case, as Julianna and Perry Myers were married Aug. 8 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple. She is due to deliver their first child in late May. No word on whether her parents attended the ceremony or not. My guess is they were not invited.
