If Hillary becomes president
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 1/22/2007

I just want to go on record and say that if Hillary Rodham Clinton is elected president of the United States in 2008, I will be leaving the country. Where I will go and what I will do when I get there, I do not know. I only know that I simply cannot remain in a country that elects Hillary to the highest office in the land.

I know this sounds like an extreme position. It probably is. I remember years ago, before the 2000 election was held, hearing similar comments from people on the dark side (otherwise known as Democrats). Actor Alec Baldwin, for example, who is as liberal as the day is long, stated that he would leave the United States if Bush were elected.

Well, we all know what happened. Not only was Bush elected once, he was elected twice, yet Baldwin still remains in this country, getting paid millions for making movies and fighting it out with his ex-wife Kim Basinger for custody of their daughter. So much for the integrity of the man. And if you want to get technical about it, he had two chances to get it right, since Bush was elected twice. But he is an actor, after all. They don't have to necessarily be smart. I remember thinking to myself, he may be good-looking, but he sure is an idiot. And if I ever saw him on the street, I would have told him as much.

Of course, that was then and this is now. Here I am, a half-way educated person, saying the exact same thing Baldwin said, except about a different person. But my story is completely different from his. He, after all, was talking about George W. Bush! A Republican. I am not only talking about a Democrat, but a woman. And not just a woman, but Hillary Clinton. If our country has sunk so low as to vote her into the highest office in the land? I'm sorry, but I just have to go.

It's not that I am against the idea of having a woman as president. I am not totally opposed to it. But if I ever voted for a woman, she would have to be a Republican and not married to Bill Clinton. Even if she met those two criteria, I still would prefer to have a man. Woman can be so caddy and petty. Believe me, I know. I am a woman, after all. Besides, I have had problems with almost all of the women bosses I have ever had, but not men.

I know what some of you may be thinking. I am intolerant. I am still living in the 1950s. I am one ofthose right-wing bigots. Well, I am none of those things. I simply cannot stand Hillary Clinton. I am sure I am not alone. Whether you agree with me or not makes no difference. I still will be leaving if she is elected.

I just need to decide where I will go. Maybe you can help with me the decision. Mexico, maybe? I love the warm weather and have seen enough snow lately to last a lifetime. Israel? Perhaps. I traveled there seven years ago and fell in love with the land; I already loved the people. Jamaica. The Virgin Islands. Aruba. Well, maybe not Aruba. We know what happens there. It's going to be hard to choose because the potential destinations are endless.

Of course, several things do have to transpire before I leave the country. First, Hillary has to win, which is a long shot, but it could happen. And then I have to convince my husband. Another long shot, but if I were a betting woman, I would wager that if anything - anyone - could get him to leave the good old USA, it would be Hillary

Bush hasn't taken away civil rights. You want someone taking away civil rights take a look at hilarys plan for guns the 2nd ammendment. pretty important to the founding fathers if they made it second. yet she wants to make them illegal. and remind me why the rich should have to pay such high taxes b/c they didn't settle for working at Mcdonalds or wal-mart their whole life. Its to bad you didn't move to canada if we could get rid of all you liberal freaks we might actually have a civilized nation again. and we hear all this complaining about the war but its not even the soldiers who are complaining. the soldiers are honored to be fighting for our country while the liberal media tells us how many iraqis died today. another thing they manage to leave out is that the marines or army didn't kill the iraqis it was suicide bombers from iraq or a neighbooring terrorist nation.

You are sad, sad, sad. We elected GW Bush who has taken our civil rights away, gotten us into an illegal war and given tax breaks to the rich while we're at war. That all stinks, but I didn't move to Canada. I'm staying to fight. Good riddance to you.

Well said M Stee. It is frustrating that so few Americans vote compared to the overall population and of those voting, there seems to be many Americans who base their votes on variables that are contrary to the founding principles of this country. I don't think your choice of a spouse or gender should be a factor in your ability to be good president. As Americans become more passionate about politics they will hopefully take the time to review a candidate’s platform and history in government. How would we make decisions if we couldn't see a candidate? It is very frustrating to see that when adults disagree with each other that they choose name calling over discussing the issues. I don’t believe there is a place for “comebacks” witty or not when discussing some serious issues. Americans are so polarized right now which further weakens the country. There is a role for bipartisan politics but in the absence of insults and with a goal of welcoming diverse opinions and seeking unification.

The biggest flaw in this post is simply that it takes the personality of the candidate to be the most relevant aspect of the candidacy. This is a highly fallacious concept of American democracy, and it's one that makes you vulnerable to being taken advantage of. I'm sure all of us here, democrat and republican and independent alike would agree that candidates are marketed to us in much the same way that toothpaste is. With that in mind, I'd regard discussions of "Hillary's a liar vs. Hillary's a brave feminist" (or "Bush is Stubborn vs. Bush is decisive") with the same contempt and wary skepticism that I would for a messageboard arguing about whether Pepsi is the choice of a new generation or not. I think the better we're able to dissociate our opinions from the Mud being thrown by the one side and the Halo being painted-on by the other, the better we'll be. I've got some statistical back-up for my general claims here if anyone's interested. MS

I did mis-speak and I apologize. The troops may not be in Iraq for our freedom of speech but they would defend it to the death if they needed to. If you have read anything about American history, you would know that our troops have fought and died for our freedom. I support our troops 100%. Maybe you should think about that the next time you are hurling insults at someone.

Oh, by the way, it was a pretty witty comeback wasn't it?

The point I was making was not about our troops. It was about the way you addressed my friend. It is unnecessary to speak to other human beings in that manner. You appear to be very full of yourself. Whether I am clueless about the war in Iraq is completely not the point. You are probably right that I am clueless about what is happening with the war. In fact, there is a whole lot about this world that I don't know. At least I am humble enough to admit it. That doesn't give you the right to insult others. The quality I do possess is the ability to be kind to others.
