Blog Entry 29 of 31 John's blog about EVERYTHING
This is a weekly (or more frequent) blog about what I feel like talking about. Hopefully it's local, but anything is better than nother.

CSU got their man - crap.
Contributed by: John Eisel   on 12/17/2007

Sometimes the best way to tell if your athletic director has made a good hire is by seeing what the other guys says.

I sat by and watched the media fiasco as Colorado State Athletic Director Paul Kowalczyk dismissed Sonny Lubick as head football coach. I doubt any situation where a highly-respected, long-tenured coach is let go can go well, but I'm sure this situation could have been handled better.

People were angry Sonny was being let go the way he was. People were angry Kowalczyk unceremoniously dismissed the highly-popular Dave Logan as a candidate for new head coach on AM 950 the Fan. The voiced their displeasure by claiming they were going to withhold donations in the future.

The search process went on and on, and crucial recruiting weekends went by the wayside.

I sat back all the while, I was hoping for a single sentence: "Jerry Kill has been named the new head coach at Colorado State University."

Jerry Kill is the head coach at Southern Illinois University, where Kowalczyk used to be the athletic director. By hiring Kill, he would have cut a lot of ties with the Sonny Lubick-era, and probably alienated the beloved coach from the program for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, that's not what I heard.

"Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild has been named the new head coach at Colorado State University."

Groan. Colorado State got one of their guys.

For those who don't know, Fairchild bleeds Green and Gold, playing quarterback back in the 1980s, before coming back to coach in Fort Collins under Lubick. He's jumped around the NFL, which always makes the ears of potential recruits perk up.

He's already brought back former Colorado State defensive coordinator Larry Kerr, back from when the Rams were winning conference championships, and he's retaining Marc Lubick on the staff, which may sooth some of the raw feelings of Sonny supporters.

About the only thing that's making me feel good about this situation is that Fairchild's not leaving the Bills until their season ends, although that's not really sating me right now.

John Eisel is 2002 graduate of the University of Wyoming, but can never seem to get through all of "Ragtime Cowboy Joe" without screwing up the lines.

As a CU grad, I'm not afraid of Fairchild. Come on, this is Division I football.
