The Best Christmas Gift Ever
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 12/21/2006

This year Christmas came early at our house. We allowed our children to open their gifts before Thanksgiving, hoping it would allow all of us to focus on the true meaning and spirit of the holiday once it came. The jury is still out on whether that will happen or not, but we gave it our best effort.

Little did I know that I would be receiving a priceless gift myself, one that no amount of money could buy. Kind of like those MasterCard commercials - or is it Visa - that talks about something being priceless. For me, this gift is.

Baseball season is over, but the wheeling and dealing is only just beginning. Winter workouts start some time in February and Major League teams are trying to put their best teams together during December and January. My favorite team is the New York Yankees and, fortunately for me, they have almost as much money as God. Some accuse them of buying championship teams, but nothing could be further from the truth. They have not won a World Series since 2000, which, by the way, they won with Pettitte's stellar pitching. If you ask me, all the Yankees' critics are sucking on sour grapes.

Anyway, as I read the sports page on December 9, I had to do a double-take. The headline read, "Pettitte decides he'll return to the Yankees." It couldn't be, I said to myself. I had to read the story again - and again - until it sunk in. Andy Pettitte is absolutely my favorite baseball player of all-time. When he left the Yankees three years ago, part of my heart went with him. Now that he is coming back, my heart can be in one place once again.

Yes, I am being dramatic and yes, I am just a tad bit obsessed with the New York Yankees. I admit it. I guess I find a bit of solace in the fact that I am not alone: we do live in Yankees Nation. (Sorry, Broncos fans; the Broncos may be number one in Denver, but the Yankees are adored the world over).

After I read the paper, I ran upstairs to where my kids were playing. I shouted, "Guess What?" They all looked at me expectedly, wondering if we had won the lottery. They were sorely disappointed when I gave them the reason why I was off my chain. I keep thinking my kids, especially my sons, are used to my crazy behavior by now, but I am still in denial, I guess.

Now that Pettitte is coming back, my quest for Rockies-Yankees tickets this summer becomes even stronger. If you can help me out, I would love to hear from you.
