Mom and daughter miracles and memories
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo   on 5/25/2008

For years, my daughter Alessandra and I have enjoyed getting away together on vacations. One of our favorite places to visit is the Pointe Hilton Tapatio in Phoenix, Arizona. It is delightful and unforgettable. Allie and I just returned from our third trip to the resort. We went to celebrate her 11th birthday, which is at the end of May. As always, the resort did not fail to meet our expectations. In fact, it exceeded them.

The Tapatio is by far the largest hotel that I have ever seen. It is enormous and actually has eight different swimming pools! Although the food and the rooms are exquisite, the sheer beauty of the place is breathtaking. And I can't even begin to explain how truly relaxing it is there. This trip was exactly what Allie and I needed.

To me, the point of traveling is to make memories. It may sound cliche, but it is how I feel. Since I work for Frontier Airlines, I take many more trips now than I ever have. Somehow it is easier to justify flying to Phoenix two or three times a year when you don't have to pay for airfare!

Allie and I made many memories on the trip; memories we'll be able to cling to during her teenage years. Things that will somehow bridge the gap between rebellious teenager and misunderstood mother. Memories that will be ours alone. As a special treat for Allie, I arranged for her to have her first-ever manicure and pedicure at the resort's spa. I realize that is a bit extravagant, but I have clipped coupons for years and have saved money around every turn, so I figured why not? I am an emotional, sentimental person, so as Allie was pampered, I watched from a close distance, tears welling up in my eyes. As a contemplative person, I think and obsess way too much. In that short time frame, I thought of how much this moment meant to me, wondering if she would really be able to comprehend its impact. I thought of my own mother, wondering if we'd ever share moments like this is the future. But mostly I was grateful that I was able to witness an everyday miracle in the making; for to me, every opportunity to create memories is truly a miracle. And even if this one did not fully register with my daughter, it did with me.

Albert Einstein said there are only two ways to live your life: one is as though nothing is a miracle and the other is as everything is a miracle. I must admit, sometimes I spend too much time living as if nothing is a miracle. But on this trip, in this moment, I was so thankful and blessed that God allowed me to live in the latter.
