Canine reading program to benefit from book fair
Contributed by: Julie Patterson on 2/11/2008

Join some four-legged furry friends at the Barnes & Noble at Southlands shopping center for a book fair benefiting the Aurora Public Library's Wagging Tales program from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 2 at the store located at 6300 S. Main St., Suite N101.

The Wagging Tales canine team will be on hand in the children's section throughout the fair to meet and greet customers or have customers read aloud to these friendly pups.

In addition, Colorado author Ann Louise Ramsey will be at the store at noon that day to sign her children's book, Just Be You, a heartwarming tale about a cocker spaniel named Honey.

Then, at 12:30 p.m., child psychologist and author Dr. Aubrey Fine will be available to sign his book, Afternoons with Puppy: Inspirations from a Therapist and His Animals, which details the evolving relationships among a therapist, his therapy animals and his patients.

A percentage of proceeds from sales throughout the day March 2 at both Barnes & Noble's Southlands and Aurora City Place locations will benefit the Wagging Tales program.

To ensure that the purchase is applied toward the program, customers must either present a voucher provided at any Aurora public library or simply inform the cashier that the purchase is to be applied toward the Wagging Tales program. Any purchases made in the stores, including food and beverages, CDs, movies and magazines, are eligible for the benefit.

For more information, call 303-739-6600.

The Aurora Public Library's Wagging Tales program, founded in 2002, encourages children to practice their reading skills aloud by enabling them to read to a furry friend who never criticizes or interrupts.

The program is offered three times a month at select Aurora public libraries, where children can read aloud to service dogs, keep the book the read and receive a "paw-tographed" photo of themselves with their new canine reading buddy.

The program also visits area schools on "Family Literacy Nights" and works with various community outreach organizations such as the Court Appointed Special Advocates and Colfax Community Network.
