CCA student snags top art award
Contributed by: Tracy Williams on 1/12/2007

Many of us might not notice fallen leaves on a lake, or even on the ground. But when Kidus Tsehaye saw leaves dancing on top of a pool of water with a reflection of tree branches in the background, he saw art.

Tsehaye, a 22-year-old first-year art student at CCA, shot the winning photo of the image, aptly titled "Reflection". It won first prize in CCA's 2006 Art Show.

Tsehaye digitally enhanced the golden color of the leaves, bringing out their brilliance. The enhancement deepened the dark shadows of the branches, which accentuated a beautiful "Reflection" against the background image of the storm-gray colored water. That eye for the combination of images makes Tsehaye's photographs extraordinary.

"I like combing different disciplines in art," Tsehaye said. "I'm an artist in general, and I don't want any boundaries whatsoever."

True to that philosophy, Tsehaye also studies 3-D animation, draws, paints and is a practicing musician who stays busy producing his own music.

He said he enjoys attending CCA where he hopes to get his associate degree in art and then pursue a degree in 3-D animation.

Tsehaye was born in Ethiopia but has lived in Colorado for the past five years. He graduated from East High School, and then attended Trinidad State Junior College where he won other awards for his art.
