A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the Coors English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructional Studio at the Community College of Aurora (CCA) was held Nov. 1, at CCA's Lowry campus.
The Coors Instructional Studio introduces technologies new to ESL instruction at CCA and features 26 student workstations with the latest computers and extra-large monitors. The Coors Brewing Company funded the equipping of the state-of-the-art studio.
"The computer workshops are so popular we were having to turn students away because we didn't have enough computers," said Aurora Language Center Program Coordinator and Community ESL Virginia Nicolai. "Now, we can accommodate more students with this new studio."
In addition to providing instruction to students in the ESL program, the Coors Instructional Studio will be a training facility for teachers from the college's ESL program. Students in GED preparation and Adult Basic Education classes, as well as from the College's Center for Workforce Development will also use the studio.
Diane Garcia, Vice President of the CCA Foundation Board, spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony emphasizing the importance of partnerships and how CCA is a vital component of the Aurora community, providing various opportunities to students.
CCAF Executive Director Diana Whye presented Coors with a thank you gift for their generous donation, and CCA President Linda Bowman thanked everyone involved over the years for contributing to such a successful program.
Attendees of the ribbon-cutting event included Colorado State Senator Suzanne Williams, Colorado State Representative Nancy Todd, Aurora City Councilman Brad Pierce, former Aurora Mayor Paul Tauer and his wife Kate, Coors Manager of Corporate Contributions Buck Boze, Coors Chief People Officer Jill Sanford, The Learning Source Executive Director Susan Lythgoe, Superintendent of Aurora Public Schools John Barry, CCA Foundation Board members, CCA's community ESL students, and faculty and staff from the college including CCA President Linda Bowman, CCA Foundation (CCAF) Executive Director Diana Whye, and CCA Director of Grants and Planning Chris Ward.
The community ESL program, a collaboration between The Learning Source and CCA, serves over 600 students each semester who speak many different languages including Spanish, Amharic (Ethiopia), Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, Chinese, and Somali.
