What freedom means to Omar D. Blair student
Contributed by: Erin Di Paolo on 2/26/2007

Freedom. Just say the word and an emotional response is invoked in just about everyone. To Angeline Almagure, an eighth-grader in Ms. Sacchi's language arts class at Omar D. Blair Charter School in Green Valley Ranch, the word is rich in meaning. And now she is a bit richer, in more ways than one, because of the word.

When Angeline hears the word freedom, she thinks of the First Amendment. From now on, when she hears the word, she will more than likely be reminded of something else: she is a winning writer. And she has proven it more than once. First, she took first place among all eighth graders in her school after writing an essay about what freedom means to her. Then she won first place in the Central Colorado District, beating out 14 other students from as many schools.

The essay contest was sponsored by Sertoma International, which stands for Service To Mankind. Almagure was invited to attend the 24th Annual Luncheon for the Central Colorado and Front Range Districts after winning the contest at her school. On February 20, 2007, she attended the luncheon to accept her first place prize, only to find out she had also placed first in her school's District. She won $100 for winning first place at her school, then another $200 for placing first in the district. She plans to open up a savings account with her winnings.

What exactly did Angeline write about? She wrote about the First Amendment right of freedom to speak her mind freely and choose her beliefs, something that is very important to her. And how did winning feel?

"I was happy, honored, and excited," Almagure said. "I was surprised because I thought somebody else would win."

Almagure, who is passionate about her family and basketball, plans to attend Machebeuf High School next year. After graduation, she would like to attend either Duke University, Texas Tech, or Tennessee University. She is unsure of what she wants her major to be, but is thinking about journalism. Eventually, she would love to play in the WNBA.

Everyone at Omar D. Blair is proud of Angeleine and wishes her continued success throughout her academic and athletic career.
