Carmelo has been my grandson's reason to function
Contributed by: Jodi Johnson on 7/1/2006

My grandson is 15 years old. His name is Sean Waverly Phillips, but I simply call him "Gorgeous". In the past few years he has experienced some things that have made him withdraw into himself. His father was in a very serious motorcyle accident which has taken quite a while to recuperate from. Year before last his uncle (his father's brother) was killed and last year his other uncle (his father's brother) died. All of these men were extremely important in Sean's life. Carmelo Anthony seemed to be able to fill a deep hurt in Sean's heart. Although basketball has always been in the front of Sean's life, he is now too introverted to participate in the sport at school.

Sean is being raised by his single mom and has 4 other brothers. Within our family Sean is a shining light. He is his mother's right hand and has a sense of humor that is second to none. They don't have money, but they have loads of love. He is about 5'8" tall. Totally talented in basketball and just all around "Gorgeous".

Sean's motivation for this past school year (9th grade) was basketball, but he didn't do very well academically because he is too shy to try to participate. He has played at the Green Valley Recreation Center and the boy's got skills!

Sean is totally "Carmeloed Out". He's got the shoes, the jerseys, the headbands and begs for anything that he sees Carmelo with. (I think if Sean was brave enough to go after a girlfriend, he'd want Carmello's). It's hard for Sean's mom to get him all this stuff, but she certainly always give it her best shot. She bought him Carmelo's shoes for Christmas and he has had them on EVERY day since. I think soon they're just going to jump off of his feet and scream "no more".

This basketball camp may be just what the doctor ordered. We need him motivated for school this year and if he feels confident enough, I know he'll be brilliant. Meeting other kids his age who admire Melo (doesn't everyone) just as much as he does and working with instructors under Melo's name, would give Sean a great sense of pride.

It does take a village to raise a child and we hope that your organization can join our "village" to help out this gorgeous young man.
