GVR residents stop community center construction!

At the GVR Metropolitan District monthly meeting on July 26th, a significant number of concerned community residents appeared to voice their objections to the board continuing forward in the construction of the hotly debated "community center" and a maintenance building. The board decided to stop construction on both projects and to have the community polled as to determine if a majority of the residents oppose the construction of the frequently ridiculed "community center".
The voices in opposition to the community center construction seem to be united in that the community had previously voted not to use tax money to fund the construction; that if the construction continued, there would have to be an increase in property taxes to pay for losses incurred in the operation; and the community was upset that with the prior election defeat; the old board had ignored the vote of the people and continued with plans to spend several millions of dollars of district money to build the unwanted and unneeded facility.
In the final vote, only
Joanne True
voted against stopping construction as she was visibly upset with the prospect that her "baby" was going to be "stillborn" when the community voted for fiscal responsibility and against spending the surplus dollars accumulated over the past twenty plus years.
The board voted to insert a post card ballot in the next edition of the GVR Newsletter for the community to decide the issue of construction of the community center; the construction of the maintenance building was indefinitely tabled.
Residents urged the board to look at ways to turn "Brown Valley Ranch" back into "Green Valley Ranch" and to once again make the community a desirable place in which to live with reasonable property taxes, and to solve the high number of foreclosures and abandoned properties.
The voter confidence in board member
Mary Schumer
was confirmed in that the Colorado Board of Accountancy has dismissed the complaint accusing her of misstating her qualifications during the recent election.
Word was received that General Steel is considering returning a portion of the $150,000 of "unrefundable deposit" paid to them by Joanne True; but director True announced that the supplier of the steel for the stopped "community center" is threatening to charge $25,000 to $30,000 for storage of the already purchased steel if the community center construction is delayed. As the cost of steel has increased since the purchase, board members considered the idea of taking delivery if the steel purchased actually existed; or cancellation of the contract; a committee of board members will investigate and report at the next meeting.

I stated that I had asked the General Contractor what he thought the costs might be if we delayed/canceled the project. He stated that the costs to delay could run $25000 to $30000 per month. This would include other construction material costs rising, additional measures that might be needed to protect the concrete in the foundation if it was poured later in the winter, possible storage charges from the supplier etc. Residents, there is a special board meeting trying to be scheduled for Thursday, July 24 at 6:30 at the Metro District office to have the General Contractor present to the board the status of the steel. Please attend this meeting and get the correct facts and not the facts according to Spratt. Call the District office (303-307-3240) and they can give you the information.

Spratt, I have buried two stillborn children and I do not compare that to the community center being delayed or canceled and I am disgusted that you do. As for the voter confidence in Schumer being confirmed, we have only her word for it the the Board of ACcountancy di in fact clear her. She provided no proof. Once a liar always a liar.
