Democratic Communitarianism
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 6/4/2007

Democratic Communitarianism is based on the belief that individuals are realized only in communities, and that STRONG, Healthy, MORALLY VIGOROUS communities are the prerequisite for Strong, Healthy, Morally Vigorous individuals. We therefore affirm the central value of solidarity. Solidarity points to who we are in our relationships that reciprocate loyalty and shared commitment to the GOOD. An individual will belong to many communities and ultimately the world itself can be seen as a community. Participation is BOTH a right and a duty. Communities become positive GOOD when they provide the opportunity and support to participate in them. It is presumed that morality and politics cannot be separated and painful and difficult though it sometimes is, IS FUNDAMENTAL to a defensible stance in today's world.

Asian communitarians are especially concerned about the values of Social Order and hold that the West's notion of LIBERTY actually amounts to anarchy.

Communitarian nature appears in the Old and New Testaments, Catholic theology, the emphasis on the Church as a community. The shared concept of GOOD VALUES are formed, transmitted, justified and enforced.
