Financial aid is an overused term. What is financial aid? If you fit into the low income category, federal grants and loans may help; however, education costs (tuition, books, room & board) far exceed this federal assistance. Best case the federal money may help with one quarter to one third of the total each year. And most of this assistance will be loans! If you fall into the middle income category, then for the most part, you are on your own to save money for school and find scholarships. Ever see the 2,000-page book of scholarships? And after hundreds of hours and many applications, one scholarship for a few hundred dollars might identify your student as a finalist. As a middle or high income family, sending students to college changes from joy and excitement to years of anxiety and debt. Financial aid - try financial burden!
