10 Ways to Save Energy This Summer

* Have both your heating and cooling systems professionally checked, to make sure they are both operating at optimum efficiency.

* Install a ceiling fan. A ceiling fan costs less to run than an air conditioner, and it is great for creating a cool breeze and keep good air circulation.

* Use a portable fan near a window to blow hot air out of the house - especially in the kitchen when you are cooking.

* Wait until night to do laundry and dishwashing, as these can generate extra heat in the home.

* Use the microwave and other countertop appliances to cook, rather than the oven, which tends to heat up the home. Or, better yet, take the cooking outside and use the grill.

* Take warm showers and baths rather than hot, as the hot water creates humidity in the home, then creating the need for you to want to cool down the home.

* Close drapes and blinds during the middle of the day to keep the hot sun out.

* To save money on your electric bill, turn your water heater down to 120 degrees.

* If you have a room air conditioner, keep it out of the sun. Room air conditioners work best when they are kept cool.

* If you have a central air conditioner, keep the thermostat set ad 78, or higher. It is estimated that you can save approximately 6-7% off your air conditioning costs for every degree above 78.
