Greenwood Village Pelican fishes without permit

A Greenwood Village pelican who likes to fish in the Cherry Creek State Park and in Denver needs no permits to do so.

"Though the waters are populated with fish by people for people, wildlife use of the fish still has priority," explained Aaron Brachfeld, a Nature Guide with TwoInTents Guided Nature Tours.

Pelicans - and most wildlife - usually don't care about human governmental boundaries until it effects them directly. "Deer understand where they are not allowed to be hunted, squirrels regularly patrol their boundaries. Every animal understands and as clearly marks their territories as we humans do. But this pelican does not care: it thinks all these waters are its territory, though we clearly marked it," said Brachfeld.

The pelican tolerates the human fishers, and is a popular sight for birders in the area. "Actually, I think the pelican - and most birds - enjoy human watching as much as we enjoy bird watching. Every species animal takes time for leisure and vacations, sometimes traveling hundreds of miles just to visit a friend or relax in a favorite spot," explained Brachfeld. "But humans are unique: we take leisure in growing, harvesting and hunting food... that has to be interesting for the animals."
