NEW WORLD ECONOMY
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 12/1/2006

The fear of job loss is nothing new. All jobs, in some sense, are temporary. All of us will face job transitions from time to time. You may not like what like on the horizon, but to move forward, we must, at some point, embrace the change. Lifetime jobs are so rare, they don't exist. Some jobs are destroyed, but new ones take their place. We must keep up to the changing world around us.

The income earned by a worker depends importantly on his or her SKILLS and EDUCATION. The fact that over 94 % of the U.S. is employed indicates that the workforce is SUFFICIENTLY SKILLED and MOTIVATED to learn new tasks that enable them to earn a real wage. The development of people's capabilities in Mathematics, writing, and verbal skills is KEY to our ability to learn and apply other ADDITIONAL skills. Education is a critical need in this world of HIGH-TECH MANUFACTURING and SERVICES. Many firms are finding constant pressure to invest in and maintain highly effective workplaces.

Information can be disseminated and transactions between individuals and organizations located anywhere in the world at a lower cost than before. New technologies reduce the cost of coordination activities between firms regardless of location. Some have argued that insourced jobs in the US has been growing faster than the outsourced jobs. Education is the long term answer for improving oneself to adjust to the realities of the marketplace. Skills and life-long education are paramount to take positions in other industries.

Many institutions offer cooperative education and internship programs through which students mix employment experience with academic study. These institutions are geared to provide graduates with the kinds of education the marketplace demands and matching them with LOCAL COMPANIES that make the most of their skills. Including biotechnology, health science, and information and communication technologies. These programs prepare graduates for positions in the PUBLIC and PRIVATE sectors. Many interns are hired full time after graduation.

Cooperative education allow the focus to be on HANDS-ON training to ensure adequate supply of knowledge. Through the partnerships developed we cultivate a more productive, highly skilled workforce.

We encourage entrepreneurism. We should be working together to cultivate innovation and NEW BUSINESS. Entrepreneurs and small business create MOST American jobs. While big companies are searching for resources overseas, domestic entrepreneurs are creating resources at HOME. Over 400 000 Americans went to work for themselves last year. The success of those startups means more jobs, as they become established businesses over time. Many of these are immigrants, whose optimism, energy and appetite for risk has fueled our economy for generations and will continue to do so.

There is a deep and wide pool of workers who put their creativity and capabilities to work in what they see as "The Land of Opportunity." The best job is the one that you have. And we all will have many jobs in our life-times. They will continue to come as long as the opportunity abounds. We are a nation of immigrants no different than those who seek our Ports of Entry today.

We have the abundant diversity of people reflected in the faces of people around the world. But make sure to be heard, that 1 st and 2 nd generations acquire the LANGUAGE SKILLS to participate as CITIZENS and fully function in our economy.

There is no better time to get more involved in our country's future.

In most local areas, 3 or 4 entrepreneurs provide the creative force behind real estate development in their area. The role of these individuals cannot be minimized. These men and many more like them, are individual entrepreneurs with vision and imagination, who creatively marshal the necessary components of development into building projects that have changed the shape of their communities. Most of these men have since done the same thing in other communities, thus creating an international community of real estate entrepreneurs who, either as individuals or as corporations, develop projects in cities throughout the world.
