School district should prove it needs money
Contributed by: Lou Schroeder on 5/9/2008

I think they are coming after the taxpayers with both barrels of the shotgun, wanting simultaneously a bond issue and a tax raise, or so called, "budget election."

They wrote, " . . . board president Aagie Barber. 'Cherry Creek is a growing district . . .'" If true, and I believe it is, increased tax base and, therefore, revenues must already be part of that growth. If true, and I believe it is, it cannot be a new and/or surprising phenomana. They must have seen it coming for a long time and failed to allocate monies for future expenditures, paying for "instant gratification" like little kids, rather than squirreling away acorns for the coming winter, like even the uneducated rodent does.

Ben Franklin reminded us that, "God helps them that help themselves."Therefore, before I could consider support for such a two pronged assault on and insult to taxpayers, I would have to be convinced of the district's successful, demonstrated efforts in identifying and eliminating all waste, fraud, abuse, inefficiency and unproductive pursuits.

Additionally, I would expect them to be able to demonstrate a history of proper prior planning, thinking ahead using solutions other than an increase in their little kid's allowance and, expectantly, a record of continuing demonstrated increases in productivity per dollar spent commensurate with the private sector of our economy.

I hear the oft repeated clamor, "It's for the kids," but just for that very reason we taxpayers have every right and reason, indeed responsibility, to demand and expect nothing less than demonstrated proper, responsible, accountable use and planning for the use of our money.

I further think I know how to spend my own money better than any school board or other government agency has ever demonstrated they do. Citizen taxpayers must never ignore the fact that each time government takes a larger proportion of our assets, it is de facto taking more of our freedom, freedom to own, control and use those assets.

If the district's student performance is so great as the district brags at the present level of taxation, just what specific, discrete, measureable, quantifiable increases in student achievement will be delivered and by what date certain will they be delivered with the proposed increased citizen forced contribution?

So, for now, until the district demonstrates responsible, proper use of their already very generously allocated taxpayer resources, my answer to your question is: "I think we should vote "NO," while it's still our dough!"

Sincerely,
Lou Schroeder
