Saturday, the
Denver Christian Crusaders traveled east on I-70 to play the
Bennett Tigers. The Tigers, new to the Colorado league, had a 5 and 1 record and were clearly excited to play. During the pre-game warm up, the Tigers chanted "This is our house!" while loud music played over the stadium sound system. If the Crusaders were intimidated, no one would have blamed them.
After receiving the opening kickoff, Bennett gained 15 yards on their first play. But from that point on, everything went the Crusader's way. The Tigers fumbled on their second play, DC recovered, and moments later the Crusaders scored a touchdown on a 45-yard pass from
G. J. Henry to
Sean Van Kooten. DC kicked off, forced a punt and once again immediately scored a touchdown, this time on a 70 yard run by junior tailback
John Lenderink. Two plays, two touchdowns, so much for intimidation and home field advantage. For all practical purposes the game was over. On defense, DC's quickness repeatedly stymied the Tiger offense. DC continued to score and shut out the Tigers on the way to a 39 - 0 victory.
Playing, what head coach
Mark Swalley described as "their best game of the year," the Crusaders were lead by Henry and Lenderink. Henry passed for 2 touchdowns and almost 200 yards. Lenderink, scored four touchdowns and also ran for almost 200 yards on just 11 carries. Senior flanker Van Kooten caught 6 passes and playing linebacker, repeatedly caught Tiger running backs from behind. For DC, the win keeps them in contention for the league championship. They play again Friday night against Clear Creek High School in the classic football stadium along I-70 in Idaho Springs.
