Contributed by: Brendan Harrington/YourHub.com on 5/18/2006

The Cherry Creek girl's lacrosse team upset defending champion Kent Denver with a 9-7 victory in the state finals at the Stutler Bowl on Wednesday night, May 17.

The Bruins jumped out to a 5-0 lead over a tentative Sun Devils team, who was undefeated on the season. Creek got a strong performance in net from goal minder Katie Gold and was able to hold the powerful Kent offense at bay.

The first half ended with a 6-2 score and the Creek coaches commanded their players to play smart, run the clock and hold on to the ball for the second half.

The Sun Devils came out kicking with a three goal flurry that nearly tied the game, but the bending Bruins would not break.

The title gives Creek their fifth state championship since 1999. Creek and Kent have ownedthe trophy, passing it back and forth for the last six years.

Meanwhile, the Creek boy's lacrosse team plays for a state title of their own - looking to repeat - Saturday May 20 at Invesco Field.
