A-Lake Whaler swim team breaks three pool records
Contributed by: Julie Huun on 6/12/2008

The sidewalks leading up to the Arapahoe Lake Whaler's swimming pool were decorated with chalk in anticipation of the first meet of the year against Willow Creek I. Kids of all ages were decked out in freshly dipped tie-die t-shirts to honor the theme of the week. It was sunny but cool at the 8 a.m. start of the meet on June 7th. . . a perfect day for a swim meet. And two 8 year-old boys and a 15-18 year-old boys relay team made it a perfect day to break pool records.

Eight year-olds Sam Roach and Brett Brenner were all smiles after each of them broke the 13 year record of 1:42.36, set in 1995 by Chris Blackett in the 100 yard individual medley. Roach edged out his friend and teammate Brenner by three seconds to hold the new pool record of 1:37.75.

"This really is great," said head coach, Jay Siegel. "It is an honor to coach these kids." Roach and Brenner received special recognition during the meet for their accomplishment and described their coaches as "awesome."

The coaches on the Arapahoe Lake Swim team all grew up swimming on the team and now spend their summers back in the neighborhood coaching the next generation of Whalers.

Later in the meet the 15-18 year old boys shattered a 15 year record in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Robert Candee, Jeff Morrison, Bill Leigh and Michael O'Dwyer swam a 1:44.13, breaking the record of 1:44.53 which has been on the record board since 1993.

"There is always some individual or group accomplishment to cheer about at a swim meet-that is what I love about a neighborhood team," said Parent Representative, Mary Jackson who added that she has watched the relay team grow up on the swim team over the last 10 years. Despite breaking team records, the A-Lake Whalers were defeated by the Willow Creek I team by 30 points. "Willow Creek swam a great meet," said Jackson.

"There are several other A-Lake pool records that could fall this season," said scorer, Blake Couch who keeps track of the scores for all events.

"We better get a plan together to post the new records," said volunteer coordinator, Lisa Gunderson who emphasized that it takes an army of volunteers to pull off a meet. "We swim at least 90 heats in a meet so it is no small task to pull off a well organized event," said Gunderson.

As the day drew to a close, Gunderson's crew began preparing for the next week when the team will host the Smoky Hill team and hopefully blow away a few more records. The A-Lake Whalers are part of the Mountain High Swim League in Division B-1. For more information on the team, visit their web site at alakewhalers.com.
