Blog Entry 73 of 91 The Happening

Steve Shultz here. I am a YourHub.com staff journalist based in Douglas County. I used to write a lot of news stories for the weekly print editions for Highlands Ranch, Castle Rock and Parker, but now I'm mainly focused on the layout and design of said newspapers. In between putting your great stories, blogs, photos and events into the print editions, I will blog about some of the stand-out submissions I see on the Douglas County Web sites –- Highlands Ranch, Castle Rock, Parker, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Roxborough and Franktown –- and any other topic that piques my interest. If you’re new to YourHub.com, I encourage you to sign up and start your own blog. If you have any story ideas in your community you’d like to share, send me an e-mail. And drop me a comment in the comment box –- bloggers feed off feedback.

7 months: On your feet

Editor's note: My son, Prahlad, is actually 8 months old today (Nov. 14), but I am a month behind in writing my monthly blog about his development. (Can you forgive me, Karin?) This entry serves as a summary of his seventh month.

Since my last blog, Prahlad has been on his feet a lot. He's not walking yet, but he stands up all the time -- without help. He will use the couch, foot rest, baby swing, our legs, etc., to pull himself up to a standing position. He loves it, and he has the marks on his face and head to prove it.

We recently stepped up our baby-proofing by installing latches on our kitchen cabinets. We decided not to latch up one of the far left cabinets, the one with all the Tupperware in it. He prefers to play with Tupperware lids over most toys any day. On a typical night, I will come home from work and Melinda will be cooking something and Prahlad will have the whole cabinet emptied out on the floor. It's amusing -- unless you forget to put them away before going to bed and slip on one when you go for a drink of water late at night.

We haven't had him weighed for a while, but at 6 months he weighed about 20 pounds. I imagine he's packed on one or two more since then, since he's been eating "real" food more regularly. We try to feed him twice a day. When we sit down to eat lunch or dinner, he sort of begs by whining and trying to grab our food. He seems to like carrots and peas pretty well, but he dislikes bananas. I always seem to make a mess when I feed him. He also loves to drink water from our glasses.

We ordered him his first Halloween costume online, from a place called One Step Ahead. Now that we have a child, we magically receive toy catalogs in the mail -- like two to four a month. They're fun to look at, but it's kind of annoying because, as is the intent of advertising, we want to buy more stuff for him. Anyways, he was a dragon for Halloween. We dressed him up the weekend before Halloween and took him to my parents' house. Then on Halloween we took him to see Melinda's mom and sisters. Whenever a trick-or-treater came to the door, though, their dog would bark and make him cry. The costume is pretty awesome, and it will still fit him next year. He didn't seem to care too much about it, though.

We've been very fortunate in that Prahlad has pretty much been sleeping solidly through each night. Well, not so much lately. Last Friday, we laid him down and went to sleep at around 10 p.m. He woke up around midnight at decided he was not tired anymore. So, he entertained himself with toys while we watched episodes from the seventh season of That '70s Show. I believe he woke up again at 6 a.m. I've been taking him out of the room when he wakes up early on Fridays and Saturdays, since Melinda lets me sleep during the work week (thanks, babe).

But all the cute, adorable things he does make up for those sleepless nights. Like how he loves to mimic people. If you laugh, he will laugh. If you smile, he will smile. He also likes to make this noise with his throat, sort of a throat-clearing sound. If I make the noise, he usually follows suit. However, if I cough or actually clear my throat loudly, he will cry.

Now that I am a father, I am quite interested in hearing cute stories about your babies/toddlers/kids/children. What are some of the funniest moments from your parenthood? Post a blog or story here on YourHub.com. I'd love to read them.

Absolutely awesome and adorable. Wow. Love the photos.

Let's sign that kid up as our gofer as soon as he gets walking!

He is So cute!!!

I remember from my daughter that when the offspring begin to get up on their feet and walk, you have to begin moving things up higher in every room ...

I forgive you.

Yeah -- we make his own food sometimes, but it can be a hassle. We tried it for a while, but ended up buying a bunch of organic baby food at the store.

Cutest dragon ever. I love baby costumes, by the way. I just want to have a kid so I can dress it up in the adorable outfits (kidding!). Hey Steve, I was watching this show on Discovery Health and showed how to make your own baby food -- you just get a thing called a baby food grinder and throw in peas, carrots, even chicken, and viola! Homemade baby food! I thought it was pretty interesting and just wondered if you had tried it.

Beautiful adorable happy

Love photo No. 2! Looks like he's about to boogie next to the bed. And he's growing so fast! He might just surpass you in height someday, Steve.

I think he is starting to look more and more like you, Steve, the older he gets!
