This whole system of political primaries needs to be junked. It's too expensive, too long and always results in the key players wallowing in the mud.
I think we should replace the political primary system with the
American Idol format.
You start with the massive cattle calls in cities around the country to make sure anyone wanting to be President is within reasonable distance of an audition.
Everyone gets a minute to say why they should be President of the United States. Granted, we'll get a few folks dressed as the Statue of Liberty, but despite that, they might have a good idea or two.
Those that pass that test get in front of the judges. I'd like to see Tim Russert, Bill O'Reilly and Ellen Degeneres in that role. Jay Leno would host.
The winners in this round get the red, white and blue ticket to the semi-finals in Washington DC.
Once they reach Washington, DC, the show moves to the Congress. I know, regular government business would be held up, but they're not accomplishing anything anyways. And what a great venue with plenty of seats for a live audience.
Each week finalists are given 1 1/2 minutes on various topics from the economy to defense etc and at the end of the show we all vote by phone or text message.
Special mentor weeks could involve people like Madeline Albright or Condy Rice.
Elimination rounds are tough, just like American Idol. But as
Brooke White proved last night, even though you have a miscue, America recognizes true potential. My advice to potential contestents is no visible tatoos.
The final comes down to one Democrat and one Republican. The final show is the first Tuesday of November. America votes and we get our new President. The show would rotate between the various broadcast and satellite/cable networks every four years.
Granted there would be a few kinks to work out in all this, not the least of which is revising the Constitution, but you have to admit this is a better way. I mean, we could get it done in 3-4 months tops.
Plus the sponsorship and merchandising opportunities would go to lowering the national debt.
