Bandimere, Indy, Daytona, LeMans -- these are all renowned and legendary courses for various forms of racecar driving. But I am here to tell you that Poston Speedway is poised to be added to that list.
Poston is a relatively short stretch of roadway, but I have witnessed some of the most exhilarating displays of daring, bravado, and invincibility in the modern history of the motorcar. Ok, maybe those terms are a little too glamorous. I should use the terms stupidity, carelessness, disregard, disrespect, and just plain dumb. I have omitted certain words that start with a letter somewhere between E and G in describing these four-wheeled acts.
Recently, I witnessed one such act that completely astounded me and prompted me to rant. In the space of roughly 1/4 mile between Copper Mesa Elementary and Grigs Road, it amazes me how much speed one can attain. In this particular incident, driver A (either fearless teen, a really cool 20-something, or a middle aged guy with something still to prove) lined up behind driver B at the 4-way stop. As soon as driver B proceeded through the intersection, driver A stomped the pedal to the floorboard, and rocketed around driver B, roaring down the wrong side of the road. I heard the hair-raising screech of brakes as driver B suddenly encountered the intersection at Grigs.
Now, I would never wish anyone bodily harm but secretly, I hoped that person had sustained heavy damage to his or her vehicle. Everyone escaped harm and damage....this time.
If Douglas County parked a patrol car at each end of this otherwise peaceful stretch of residential road, they could certainly fund its entire law enforcement branch for the next several years. Or perhaps the funds from the resulting speeding tickets could be used to install a series of speedbumps similar to the ones located along LoneTree Parkway or throughout the Forest Park neighborhood in Castle Pines North.
At some point, there will be a tragedy. It could be a relatively harmless event like veering off the road into a lamp post (oh wait, that has already occurred), or it could be a loss of control ending with a crash into someone's home.
Unfortunately, it often takes an event like that before consistent preventative action is taken. Let's hope not.
