Oh crap, now I sound like a politician.
I wrote yesterday that the DNC won't make any money. And it won't. But what might make a nice impact on the local economy is Barack Obama's decision to give his acceptance speech at Invesco Field.
Everything up to that point will be a total loser from the menu to event planning. But the Invesco deal is going to bring in a lot more people and they'll need a place to stay, even if just for a night.
And they won't be restricted by the DNC "No fry-must be colorful and biodegradable" menu rules. They can eat at
KFC or
Outback or any dang place they please. Although, and get this, the DNC is now backing off it's silly menu guidelines. Cheeseburgers, fries and donuts are now ok as opposed to nuts and twigs.
You folks forlornly waiting to rent your lofts, homes and RV's for the convention, still might be able to actually get a night or two worth of rent. Just don't expect to earn thousands. Settle for hundreds. There is no crying in baseball and no Santa Claus in political conventions.
Howard Dean and company haven't announced just how many "real" people will be able to actually get in, but I'm thinking at least 20-30 thousand. But it's the Obama campaign running things now (Thankfully) and I think they'll try and get in as many
people as possible.
That extra 20-30 thousand might be the difference between a green convention, and people actually making some green.
But we have a new fly in the political ointment. The Networks are saying they likely will have to
CUT BACK coverage of the convention to cover the added expense of moving the final night to Invesco. (As I predicted yesterday, the extra costs will be huge)
Of course, local DNC dis-organizers promised us tons of coverage, which like everything else they've promised so far, likely will come up a tad short.
