Let me begin the right way, for the record - this is my first blog. You can critique, comment, contribute - but keeping everything on the table, read my profile first so you know I am not hiding what we do and why I would post this blog.
OK - so the question is on the table, can Film and TV change a person? We believe that it can. We believe that the entertainment industry has the ability to reach multitudes and change the world. Think about the way you might feel after a 'great' film. The way you might be inspired by a well done documentary.
Just think about this, from the TV side first; how many watch Extreme Makeover? Have you shed a tear as these families lives are forever changed from the impact of the community getting involved to make a difference? You are only moved by the quality of the show - you are moved by the fact that you
saw it. Without the 'show' you wouldn't 'know'.
How many kids are running around with High School Musical 'gear' and wanting to be in drama club now?? What? When I was a kid, no one wanted to be in drama! Theater classes in communities are filling up - why? You can't walk into a store without seeing a Troy Bolton...something....anything! Kids movies have a huge impact on our culture. It starts with them, watching animated movies and all of a sudden they are recycling and saving penguins! This is great stuff - and when you see a movie about what is really happening in the world are you moved? Are you moved to action?
People see movies that tell the truth and are moved, they see movies that tell a lie and are moved - Film and TV can change a person and change the world! So where is the responsibility falling ... to be sure that it is the Truth that is protrayed, to be sure that the entertainment is safe, to be sure that we are not sending kids down but lifting them up - showing them how
they can impact the world and change it.
The responsibility lies with all of us, monitoring from home and being sure that we produce this kind of safe entertainment that is good enough to bring us in. From kids to adults, we can't compromise quality, intensity and excitement - but we can do it the right way, with the right message, the right role models and the right impact! Join me...
