It's no small irony that the talk this week is of Rod Smith and Selvin Young. Rod retired this week, Selvin is just starting his career.
Both have one thing in common: They're walk-ons.
Rod Smith came from a Division III school. Selvin from the mightyTEXAS LONGHORNS.
Neither was drafted. No one believed. Except for themselves.
Rod Smith showed up, boy did he show up. With two SuperBowl rings and three Pro Bowl appearances he's earned his spot in Canton.
I was surprised (I admit bias here as we bleed the burnt orange of TEXAS at our house) that Selvin wasn't at least drafted.
So none of the "pros" believed in him. Selvin believed in himself, just like Rod Smith did.
Selvin Young is very likely to start this season at running back.
And I do believe he'll quickly become a fan favorite, because he'll be a scoring leader.
In football, especially the NFL, you just have to think Young!

Are there a more poorly timed set of traffic lights than the ones along Highlands Ranch Blvd?
