My Fun Thing Genealogy
Contributed by: Barbara Salisbury   on 5/14/2008

Genealogy, in case you have never looked into it, can be a lot of fun, but it can also be very educational. It will also be very time consuming--you can count on it!

I delved into my genealogy a little in my young married days. I mostly gathered information talking with my relatives and my husband's relatives and created a basic family tree.

I have always been curious about going further, but never had the time after I became single mom. About nine years ago my mother died and , in going through her things, I ran across numerous old yellowed newspaper obituary clippings. As I read them I would read about a great-grandfather, great grandmother, great aunt or uncle and would learn something about them I had never known. Things like who their parents were or where they were born. As I read more clippings and learned more, I became very interested in researching back further into my genealogy. I became fairly obsessed with doing this research for about 3 or 4 years. I still like to do research, but have slacked off a bit because of lack of time. Genealogy is like a puzzle. Every time you find a new piece to the puzzle, there is such excitement! But you can't stop, you have to find that next piece.

I no longer have my parents, grandparents, or any relatives who can answer my questions about my genealogy. I regret not having asked more when they were still around. Getting answers from someone with first hand knowledge is so much easier than researching for hours to find the answer!

My searches have, however, led me to many cousins, first, second, third and more, who also have done research or who were lucky enough to have the family history handed down to them. We put our pieces together to see what we came up with.

I have learned to use the internet which is the greatest source for genealogy reaseach! I've even met several of my distant cousins through the internet. It is almost unbelievable the wealth of information there.

I have enjoyed tremendously going to the library genealogy sections and doing research. I've visited the State of Texas Archives, the United States Federal Archives, and the Dallas, Denver, Mid-Continent, Durham, NC , Asheville, NC, and Quitman LA libraries and hope to visit many more before I die.

My two genealogy vacations, combining research and sightseeing, were something I will never forget. I have a great desire to learn more than dates and places of births, deaths and marriages, military duty, etc. I want to learn how my ancestors lived, what vocations they had, what religion they held, what their life was like and any other details that I can find. In my trips I have been able to find some very interesting details of their lives that helps me to feel closer to them. Local libraries in the cities where they lived are the best source of these details.

In the future I will write in more detail about my trips and share some pictures. I invite questions from my readers about genealogy. I would love to help anybody who is interested in getting started.
