Blog Entry 11 of 17 Simple Can Be Best
There are moments in someone's life that just shouldn't be kept to themselves, rather shared with others for knowledge, wisdom, peace of mind or just a good laugh. I have experienced many things, yet still have a lot of living to do. But for now, these are my stories, a peek inside a life well lived so far - because simple can sometimes be best.

Fresh eyes on something old
Contributed by: Sarah Schneider   on 10/29/2007

I have finally come to realize now that I have been out in the corporate world for a bit that being young and full of opportunity has its advantages, it's all about embracing opportunities as they pass by. However the biggest lesson of all I have learned is being young means starting at the last of the pack, the end of the line - I think they call it 'the low end of the totem poll.'

I, like most everyone else out here wish to be someone - make a mark here upon this earth, to be remembered, to be unforgettable, make a difference, be recognized, be a part of history, or to be noticed in a respectable honorable way. Not too much to ask right?

This morning I got into work and as I was turning on my computer I heard talk among the higher ups about seeing some footage of a commercial that was shot a few days ago. For a second I was excited, maybe I'll get to sit in on this meeting and give my opinions or ideas. I have always wanted to be a part of things like this. I began to see other higher ups streaming into the building all going into the conference room. This could be my chance I thought to myself, to be a part of the decision making process. I had always wanted to be a part of that, but everyone always says that you have to start at the low end to be included. Whatever, I thought, this may be different.

As I began to surf though my morning emails I saw the head of marketing coming over to me. My heart began to pound, palms sweating, "Sarah" he said smiling, (my heart pounding harder, arm pits now sweating - thinking to myself yes, yes of course I'd love to help decide our motto), "could you please go out and get some coffee for the folks in the conference room." What, I thought to myself, are you kidding? Coffee? I stared at him with a blank look on my face; words were fleeing from my mind. "Sarah," he said in a questionable tone, "Yes, of course coffee," I hesitantly replied. I grab my pen a pad I had laid on my desk earlier for notes in the decision making meeting I had hoped to attend, now only to use it as an order pad for coffee.

Twelve coffee orders later I was standing in a Starbucks line out the door, wondering how does one move up in the chain of command. And why do the younger employees automatically, have to start so low on the ol' ladder.

If the corporate world could stop for a second and think about this, they may realize that younger employees who come to them with less experience could be very beneficial to their company. They should consider putting them in higher level positions because they are coming on board with fresh eyes and new ideas. Perhaps these individuals could help companies move in a direction that they are current not going because of old thinking. Get some fresh eyes on big decisions and another take on curtail ideas. The younger employees could move toward promoting products so that it can be targeted toward their generation. They will know what appeals to the younger crowd, and what is 'in' at this moment.

It's not the 'out with the old, in with the new' approach I'm taking, it's about including employees who have less experience or are right out of school. The younger market is also what businesses want to consider. Every company could use a fresh look on an old idea.

No problem. I understand how frustrating it can be. The best way to get ahead, however, is to continue your education and prove your worth. When you're the boss, you can change the way things work. In the meantime, opportunity is only going to knock if you start chasing it down. Otherwise, you'll simply just be standing in line at Starbucks.

Thank you Jeffrey. It's too bad things aren't a little different out here in this 'career' world.

I've got an MBA in Marketing. With all that training, you'd think that I'd know it all, but I certainly don't. My best new marketing ideas normally come from my wife, who has no formal marketing education. What you say is absolutely correct. Unfortunately, you run into a lot of people with a mindset different from yours, and they tend to be the ones holding the strings of power.
