Blog Entry 3 of 4 Speaking Up for Kids and Families
This blog is dedicated to exploring pathways to healing when families experience difficult seasons of life that sometimes go unnoticed or unattended. It will focus on the differences between the needs of children and adults, and why they matter. The goal is to promote hope, health, and help for regular people who confront challenges brought on by dramatic change or circumstances beyond their control. Drawing on years of professional experience helping people in crisis, and informed by what I learned from going through my own crises, I discuss issues and topics in common language, from the vantage point of common people. I have learned mostly from the stories of those I have helped over the years. I hope this blog will attract the stories of others, and that I will continue to learn from them.

Living with pet loss
Contributed by: Michael Dawson   on 2/10/2008

Our pets are such an important part of our lives! Today, we know that people mourn the loss of a pet just about as much as the loss of human loved ones.

Does anyone have any good stories of veterinary clinics or anyone else who helped you after you had a pet die? I have just passed the one year anniversary of the death of my beloved Springer Spaniel, Cooper, and my mourning has surfaced again for a season, mostly in the form of healing memories. (Pheasant hunting in South Dakota this past fall without him was not one of them; it was not much fun at all.)

Part of my bittersweet memory of Cooper is the way the clinic handled things after he died. He died a few days after my brother died and my grief was already pretty strong, so a lot of what happend seems like just a blur. But somewhere inside of me is a place that feels some comfort because of how the folks at Companion Animal Clinic handled things during and after his death. In honor of Cooper, and since I can think a bit more clearly now, I would love to hear your stories of things that helped when your pet died.

I help people with their grief as my profession, but there is nothing like the things you learn from your own loss experiences. I hope my experience can help others, and I trust that yours will, too.
