Blog Entry 1 of 11 Civilization is Overrated
For those that pay some attention, does it feel like our nation, our culture, our world is heading down hill at an accelerating pace? As we ride this runaway train (that some people mistakenly call progress) one has to wonder where we'll end up and who'll survive the wreck.

Happy HalloThanksMas?

That's right. We're smack in the middle of the yearly holiday extravaganza that is Halloween-Thanksgiving-Christmas. I'd include New Years, but nowadays that holiday is only for sleeping off the HalloThanksMas hangover, which is what you get when the credit card bill shows up.

It starts with Halloween, where it's now fashionable to decorate your house as a kind of warm up for the big Christmas display you're planning. Then you load up on candy to treat the kids that don't show up because apparently parents are now too fearful to let their kids out of their sight.

Thanksgiving is that 4 day weekend for food and football and to give thanks that you get a 4 day weekend. Of course, for many people it's "Black Friday", the high holiday of consumerism, that makes the weekend so special. (I prefer to refer to it by it's other name, Buy Nothing Day)

Now it's all about getting ready for the "big day". More shopping... I'm so happy that the local "Temple of Consumerism", Park Meadows, is adding MORE SHOPPING! Right, there aren't enough places for people to spend money they don't have. By the way did you know we have a little issue with debt in this country? And our savings rate is NEGATIVE! Now that you've sucked the equity out of your house in that refi, and the real estate bubble is popping, and you owe more than your house is worth, and then you get outsourced, and ....that's a whole 'nother post.

How much did you spend on your Christmas spirit this year? At the risk of incurring the wrath of the friendly folks at YourHub.com, I have to wonder how ignorant these people are of the coming energy crisis to encourage people to waste energy on the most ostentatious Christmas display possible? This is wrong on so many levels. If you're gonna throw money away, why not do something good with it and maybe FEED some people! Maybe YourHub can have a contest to see who throws away the most garbage? Who wastes the most water? Lets cheer on over-consumption!

By the time you finally get to the 25th of December, you hope you didn't screw it up and you can't wait for it to be over. Nothing like trying to meet the high expectations of kids who are told thousands of times by commercial media what they need to be happy. Does Christmas inflation mean that whatever they get this year has to be bigger, better, or in more quantity than last year?

So Happy HalloThanksMas! (I'm looking forward to New Years)

I bet the way the folks save on energy is by turning off their heat at night since they are sustained by the warmth of their holiday lights.
