50 mpg? Here's how we can do it!
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 3/26/2008

I took a quick look at the insert for this weekend's auto show at the Denver Convention Center.

One irony will be the number of people who'll take light rail to go to the show.

But green is the word in the auto industry with everyone working towards next generation hyrbrid, full electric or hydrogen technology.

Sadly, we could have been there 20 years ago. But there were no real incentives for the industry and they went merrily along the way of making lots of money and not really giving a hoot in heck about what we wanted, needed or could afford.

Foreign competition certainly has made a difference. The Big 3 is now the not-so-big 3. And that number could go to 2 sooner than later.

But we're still years away from having companies that produce fleets of truly fuel effecient cars, trucks and vans.

So..... here's my suggestion and any of you political candidates are free to use it.

Offer the first company that manufactures cars and trucks here in the United States a challenge to produce a fleet that has an average of 50 miles per gallon within five years.

What do they get in return? NO INCOME OR CORPORATE TAXES for as long as they stay in business. This includes employees who are working for the company when they achieve the goal.

The loss in revenue will be more than made up by the public who will have much more money to spend on things other than gas.

Dangle that plum and I guarantee you it will get done. If Toyota wins, so be it. Ditto for GM or Ford. (I don't think we're going to see the Chrysler brand much longer)

Finally, a sad note. One of the most legendary nameplates in the world, Jaguar, has been sold to an Indian company by Ford. It was shameful enough that the Jag was no longer a truly British brand. This flat out sucks.

But truly the end of an era. Jags will go from jewels to junk within weeks.
