Politics to life in general, a view from a slightly right of center/off-kilter guy.

Meet John McCain's Pastor
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 4/28/2008

Mush is being made of the relationship between Senator Barack Obama and his Pastor. Some of it fair, some of it not. But I think one can safely describe Reverend Wright at "fiery" regardless of the charm offensive he's currently on.

He's said some offensive things from the pulpit. They're documented. He's likely said a lot of good things from the pulpit as well, but that isn't "news." Which is both too bad and unfair.

I don't know who Senator Clinton's Pastor is, but I do know John McCain's.

He's Dan Yeary of North Phoenix Baptist Church. Pastor Dan is anything but fiery. And he's not political. At least not from the pulpit. He simply preaches the word of God. You won't even find his picture on the NPBC website. I attended NPBC when I lived in Phoenix and was baptized there. It's where I was saved, the very first time I heard Dan Yeary preach.

Senator McCain has been attending NPBC for 15 years, although he's an Episcopalian. Baptists believe that you have to make a concious demonstration of your acceptance of Jesus as the Son of God and your personal savior by being baptized. Like Senator McCain, I was raised an Episcopalian and baptized as a baby. But I "took the plunge," the full emersion to cleanse myself of my sinful past as an adult in 1997. So today I'm a Southern Baptist.

Senator McCain has not chosen that path. That's perfectly ok. But he attends a swell church with a wonderful Pastor in Dan Yeary. You can listen to Dan Yeary's podcasts of his sermons by linking here. I listen to Pastor Dan every week on my iPod.

Other than the broadcast of Dan Yeary's sermons on KAZ-TV or his podcasts, you won't see Dan Yeary talking with Bill Moyers. He's too busy preaching. He's been asked about John McCain in a few newspaper interviews, but that's about it.

Again, he's anything but political, he just preaches the Word. And he does it most ably. North Phoenix Baptist Church can be described as a mega-church. It seats 3200, with an overall membership of over 20-thousand. It sits on a 44 acre campus. But it has a one on one connection with its congregation. And I never recall hearing anything the least bit political ever said there. Just the Word.

All this said, going to Church doesn't make you a Christian. The acceptance of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and your personal Savior does. Christians do sin however. Every day. Dan Year will be the first to admit he does. He's human. That's why we have churches!!

I think churches and politics are a bad mix. I left our church here in Highlands Ranch because it mixed politics with religion.

Many people think of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr as being political. He wasn't. He simply preached equality and non-violence. Exactly what Jesus Christ did.

The relationship between any of the candidates and their pastors is between them. Voters can make up their own minds if it impacts their vote or not. I don't think it should.

I like John McCain for the honorable man he is. I think he'll make a great President. The fact he goes to North Phoenix Bapist Church is great, but doesn't factor into my decision to support him.

But I thought it would be good for you to meet his pastor. If you're ever in Phoenix, stop by 5757 North Central Avenue some Sunday morning. You'll be glad you did.

Sounds like Pastor Dan does what Pastors are supposed to do. He follows Paul, the Jew turned Christian, who said in 1 Corinthians 1:23 ..."but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,..." I am sure MLK would not appreciate Wright's hateful speech.
