I just read that this past Sunday the Capital Times of Madison, WI ceased publication of its daily print edition. It's available strictly online.

Keep in mind that Madison is the state capital of Wisconsin and also home to the University of Wisconsin. The paper had been in publication for 90 years.

Also this week I read that both of Denver's papers, the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post continue to bleed subscribers. Ironically I read about that in the online edition.

I love reading the newspaper. It's part of my morning routine. I hop off the treadmill then between 5:30-6am it's a cup of coffee and the morning paper while watching multiple local and national channels on split screen. Part of my job is to be informed about what's going on in the world.

Don't confuse me with a fuddy-duddy technophobe. I have a Blackberry and a wireless laptop.

But reading a newspaper is a tangible thing. You hold it in your hands, you can literally fold it or mold it. And heaven forbid if I miss reading Garfield, Funky Weatherbean, Zits or Luann.

But it's a fact of life that newspapers are on the way out. My guess is within 5 years we'll be down to just one daily. And within 10 years, no paper at all.

I can only imagine what will happen to the weekly papers like the Wet Mountain Tribune. It's our link to our other hometown of Westcliffe CO when we're not at our mountain home.

Neither of my kids who live in Denver and Atlanta subscribe to the local paper. They get their news online. So do I. But, I will miss doing my Tony Soprano impersonation as I head out to the driveway and pick up the paper each morning.

Citizen journalism is all the rage. But most citizens aren't trained journalists. And ultimately, while opportunites like yourhub are hugely empowering, what will happen to the real journalists?

Great blog. Print newspapers are such a part of society's fabric I cannot imagine life without them, just as I cannot imagine life without library books. I hold out hope a happy, enduring marriage between web and print is possible, and I think YourHub.com is one of the first steps in the courtship. Save our newspapers!

I too like the paper but the continued hikes in subscription rates have probably not helped their cause. The product and value was better before the two papers merged.

Citizen jopurnalists will never replace true journalism. That's what I wish the powers that be would understand. Why would I look to YourHub for news when I get plenty of it on TV, on the internet, in the Douglas County Newspress, etc. ad nauseum. You should throw in a comment once in awhile, Brian. Prove to us your read anyone's but your own....LOL mc
