Reality Check: Report from the front lines
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 5/1/2008

Like some of you I was bummed when Brooke White got voted off Idol last night. On the drive in listening to my favorite news-talk station, all the discussion was complaining about the cost of oil.

I got a reality check this morning when I got an e-mail from a soldier me and my fellow employees at Video Professor, Inc. have "adopted."

We've been sending him and his unit packages containing much needed items from magazines to q-tips to snacks etc. He's been especially grateful for receiving them. He told me just how much his unit appreciates knowing that people haven't forgotten them and care about them.

He has to be careful what he reports but he referenced "bad news" in his unit and that he was having a "painful" day. I'm not mentioning my soldier's name to respect his privacy and security. I can tell you him and his unit are in southern Bahgdad.

You may have read or saw reports in the news about the stepped up attacks by terrorists against our men and women in Iraq. So I didn't have to read too far between the lines to figure out what's been happening to our soldier's unit.

So if you're having a bad day, complaining about traffic or the line at Starbucks, take a moment to think about the brave men and women, all volunteers who are serving us and protecting us.

I doubt that our days are near as painful as the brave soldier I got the e-mail from today.
