Blog Entry 134 of 195 I blog, therefore I am.
Politics to life in general, a view from a slightly right of center/off-kilter guy.

Brother, can you spare $1.85 million?
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 5/6/2008

Ok, as you know, I remain a bit of a skeptic about the DNC coming to Denver. Especially the cost vs benefit part. I was just in Minnesota and the folks up in Minneapolis are feeling a bit uneasy about the RNC as well.

We've been told by just about everyone involved it will generate gobs of millions of dollars for the city plus priceless publicity.

Don't get me wrong, I really hope Brian Williams and Bill O'Reilly say what a great city Denver is while they're here, with them positioned in front of the Rocky Mountains. Hopefully the brown cloud won't be around that week.

But today I read that despite Mayor Hickenlooper promising no out of (our) pocket expenses, Denver has to write a check upfront for $1.85 million to cover insurance costs. And apparently it's not 100% certain the city will get paid back.

H-m-m-m-m.

Denver City Councilman Rick Garcia, was quoted in the Rocky Mountain News saying, "I'd like a guarantee for the full $50 million (referring to the estimated cost of the convention) which has been slow in coming."

I fear that this whole political shindig is going to cost far more than $50 million, because everything involving government and/or politics always goes over budget. And promises of revenues always come in under what is projected.

And all we have to count on is a "definite maybe" about getting paid back.

It's my hope that the very talented andvery inquisitive local media folks will get out their calculators and add everything up once the smoke has cleared from the '08 DNC.
