Blog Entry 146 of 254 I blog, therefore I am.
Politics to life in general, a view from a slightly right of center/off-kilter guy.

One drive, powerful images.
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 5/18/2008

As I was driving to our cabin in the Wet Mountains this weekend I drove by the Arena in Colorado Springs. State Democrats were holding their convention there this weekend, over 10,000 attended. A big group and their party's soon-to-be nominee Barack Obama (Sorry Hillary) has pledged to start pulling troops out of Iraq the first day of his presidency. If he gets elected that is. Further down the road I passed the rail yards for Fort Carson. A very large train full of equipment was being put together, each car loaded with armored vehicles, tanks etc. All headed for the port of Beaumont, Texas to be loaded on to ships headed for Iraq. And there have been so many trains. Then driving by Supermax in Florence, I thought of the evil men locked up there, including the Shoe Bomber, he's one reason we almost have to strip naked when we go through the airport. Over a stretch of 135 miles these three images stuck with me, because they sum up much of what is going on in the world and why. It's one reason we love our cabin so much. It's tucked away on several acres and when we're there, we can forget about the world for a while. We look out across the valley at the Sangre de Cristo Range, as beautiful as any in the country and the world seems so very far away. And it feels good. Even if it's just for the weekend.
