Politics to life in general, a view from a slightly right of center/off-kilter guy.

Blackhawks and Bentley's-Just another Denver Day.
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 6/18/2008

Two pics in this morning's Rocky caught my attention. On the cover was a shot of an Army Blackhawk chopper filled with special ops guys, aka big hairy scary dudes. They're training (so we're told) for counter terrorism and flying around and between downtown buildings.

By contrast, on the cover of the biz section is a shot that could be a promo still for Sex and the City. A sweet young thing is pictured wearing designer everything, carrying a designer bag talking on her cell phone while stepping out of her Bentley at Cherry Creek Mall. Wonder if she tipped the valet who parked her car?

I bear no grudge against either, both are just going about living their lives on a Denver Day in 2008.

But the contrasts, at least to me, are stunning.

Mileage update aka "Life in the Right Lane."

I was pleasantly surprised by the mileage I got going home from Lakewood to Highlands Ranch last night. I had my AC on but the route allows plenty of opportunities for coasting because it's pretty much a downhill trip. I got 28.8 MPG based on my car's computer. This morning by contrast, it was 28.3 with no AC but a lot of uphill driving and a little more traffic than normal.

What I'm learning is just how tender you have to be with the gas pedal and speedometer to nurse the best mileage possible. And I'm getting used to driving in the right lane. At least a little.

Mileage so far:

Monday:
Highlands Ranch to Lakewood: 26.9 MPG
Lakewood to Highlands Ranch: 29.2 MPG

Tuesday:
Highlands Ranch to Lakewood: 28.9 MPG
Lakewood to Highlands Ranch: 28.8 MPG (With AC)

Wednesday:
Highlands Ranch to Lakewood: 28.3 MPG

I'll post the average Friday and see if I deserve a beef or bouquet. Another interesting test will be heading to the cabin outside of Westcliffe this weekend. Very steep grade going up the Wet Mountain Range, but an opposite advantage driving down that range Sunday.

Meanwhile, Blackhawks and Bentley's....... wow.
