Gen. Wes Clark: Conduct unbecoming
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 6/30/2008

Retired General and NATO Commander Wesley Clark was a guest on Face the Nation on CBS yesterday.

He made a very surprising statement, which was unprofessional at best and simply stupid at worst.

He was speaking on Senator John McCain's military experience and its relevence to serving as President of the United States aka Commander in Chief.

This is what Clark said. ""Well I don't think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president."

First of all General Clark, he didn't "ride" a fighter plane, he flew it. Naval Aviation is the toughest there is. I've been embedded on 3 different aircraft carriers and these aviators are the best of the best.

Secondly, while getting shot down may not be any sort of qualification to serve as President, how you survived afterwards does. By the way, in Vietnam our pilots and aviators weren't allowed to take out missile sites aimed at them. One of the rules established by a Democratic Congress and Democratic President at the time. You couldn't fire at them unless they fired first. Something to look forward to should Obama get elected.

Senator McCain spent five years as a POW, tortured daily and one of the reasons he can't raise his arms above his shoulders is he would be tied with his arms behind him and hoisted up on a shackle, literally having his limbs pulled out of their sockets.

He survived that. I doubt as President he'll do anything more challenging. Dealing with Pelosi and Reid will be a walk in the park. Although likely less pleasent.

Clark also dismissed McCain when he was a squadron commaner because it was in peace time. Another incredibly ignorant statement coming from a senior officer. Navy squadrons train all the time, and until you've landed on a pitching aircraft carrier deck in rotten weather, General Clark is advised to keep his opinions to himself.

General Clark of course is grandstanding for the #2 spot on an Obama ticket. Instead he embarrased himself and insulted a genuine hero.

General Clark, apologize sir, and do it quickly You're a better man than what you showed Sunday.

Politics often brings out the worst in the nicest people. This was the case with General Clark.

There are better reasons not to vote for John MCCain. What he went through was awful but what he put his first wife through was awful too.
