Politics to life in general, a view from a slightly right of center/off-kilter guy.

Satire: It depends if you read or just look
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 7/16/2008

An example of political satire (and the 1st Amendment) caught my eye this week. It's safe to say it caught the attention of a lot of eyes.

Just in case you haven't heard, the current cover story of The New Yorker has the cover showing Barack Obama dressed as a Muslim, his wife as an Angela Davis look-a-like with an AK-47, an American Flag burning in the fireplace and a picture of bin Laden hanging on the wall.

Home Sweet White House.

If it was designed to catch attention, it did. Big time. The article inside the magazine is about all the perceived beliefs about Obama and his wife. It is thoughtful and well written. But it's the cover and not the convent that made the news.

The problem is we're a nation that is moved by imagery instead of reading content. It's simply easier. What we saw was outrageous. What was written was thought-provoking. But in this case, the picture was worth more a thousand words that were never read.

Wednesday memo:
Speaking of satire, this is funny!

Hey Buddy, want to save a life?
Support Bonfils Blood Centers. Giving blood is easy. It takes about half an hour every two months. It's also very likely that by doing so, you'll save someone's life.
