Blog Entry 92 of 215 I blog, therefore I am.
Politics to life in general, a view from a slightly right of center/off-kilter guy.

Let's hear it for, and support LOCAL radio.
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 3/25/2008

You may have read that the Department of Justice has ok'd the proposed merger between satellite program providers XM and Sirius. The FCC still has to approve but it appears likely. Which begs the question, why did they not approve the merger a few years ago between Echostarand DirecTV? That would have been a huge plus for viewers.

Before I'm accused of being out of touch with all things technical, we've had satellite TV at our house for 9 years, I use by video iPod every day, this is written on an iMac plus the videos I've posted on youtube have about 150,000 hits.

And both XM and Sirius deliver some pretty cool programming, and if they combine operations, they'll do so a lot more efficiently.

But I simply prefer my music, news and information from local radio stations. Primarily I listen to radio in the car. My commute takes about 35 minutes and I make sure to tune into 850 KOAboth morning and afternoon. And I "drop in" on 1600am ESPN radio especially during college football season.

In my office I listen to KUVO 89.3FM, a great jazz station. And when we're at our mountain home, it's Eagle Country 104. When you live at 8500 feet, you want to be up to date on local weather.

All have different formats, but the one thing they have in common is local news, traffic, weather, sports and with KUVO, what's going on in the LOCAL jazz scene.

Our satellite TV system at home as dozens of great music channels covering every genre, and we listen to it a lot.

Radio is struggling, due in no small part to the economy, too many companies that don't know how to run radio stations and competition from the likes of XM or Sirius. But neither XM or Sirius is setting the financial world on fire either.

But I hope local radio never goes away. We'd be in big trouble if it did.

I also hope that local radio survives. When I am driving, it helps keep me patient.
