Blog Entry 136 of 143 I blog, therefore I am.
Politics to life in general, a view from a slightly right of center/off-kilter guy.

All a twitter about Twitter
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 5/8/2008

Do you Twitter? Do you check who is twittering by tweetscanning? Are you Linkedin? Do you Flickr or do you like to have fun on Fubar? Ok, I'm confusing nouns with verbs here.

I'm facinated by social media. This blog is social media. But new and different types of social media are popping up on Web 2.0 every day.

My favorite is linkedin.com. Think of it as My Space for business professionals. It's a way to network online, maintain existing contacts, make new ones and even catch up with friends and colleagues going all the way back to college or even high school.

I started a few weeks ago and as of today I have 69 direct contacts. But when I add in all their contacts, and their contacts' contacts, the total number of business professionals I'm linked to is 319 thousand! One of my colleagues is linked to over a million people.

My most surprising link is to a former college friend who also worked at the same television station I did when we were starting out. What really is amazing is how our careers paralelled each other even though I was in media and he was in the military.

He was doing press liason at the Pentagon while I was covering the Pentagon. That was years ago, but we first realized it when we linked with each other. Better late than never.

Flickr is another cool site to post pictures and videos. I've been posting on youtube for a few years now, but Flickr is another opportunity to share with the world.

On YouTube alone I've had well over a hundred thousand hits.

Social media can be abused, there are sometimes vile and anonymous postings and these are the kinds of 1st Amendment Issues our founding fathers did not anticipate. Web 2.0 is no place for hate and venom. And we have to find a way to deal with it.

But for the most part, social media empowers those of us honest folks living along Main Street USA.

So get out there and express yourself!!

How about www.joinslingshot.com? I got into Linkedin a couple of months ago. I might not be taking full advantage of each of these, but I have not seen any benefits to them yet.
