Blog Entry 139 of 197 I blog, therefore I am.
Politics to life in general, a view from a slightly right of center/off-kilter guy.

Visit, then read the book later
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 5/13/2008

Dateline: Savannah GA

It's been a delightful weekend of beach-going, eating lots of food, (especially the Mom's Day brunch at Paula Dean's) and soaking in the history. And there's a fabulous ocean beach just minutes away.

Savannah has a history going back to the Revolutionary War. Being there is like stepping back in time. The city is going to great lengths to maintain the charm and architecture of the city. If it wasn't for the cars, you'd think it was the 1860's.

Sherman stayed there, resting up after burning down Atlanta. Robert E. Lee also stayed a while. Neither was there at the same time.

It's a town full of art, music, great food and drink, beautiful homes, eccentrics and lots of ghosts. We didn't see any, but we heard about a lot of them. And how seriously do people believe in the ghosts? Many businesses shut down before dark, even on Friday and Saturday nights when a lot of folks are out and about. No sense taking chances for a sale or two.

It's a popular place to shoot movies, everything from Forrest Gump to Midnight at the Garden of Good and Evil.

Speaking of Midnight at the Garden of Good and Evil, we watched it on DVD late Sunday evening.

Trust me, visit Savannah first, then either read the book watch the movie later. I fear if I saw the movie first, we might not have gone. Based on a true story, Midnight at the Garden of Good and Evil shows a side of Savannah the visitor's bureau might not want you to know about.

There are more than a few skeletons in the closets of Savannah, or buried in the walls or under monuments. Actually lots of them.

Best not to know about them until you actually get there.

I have to go diet now.
