HRCA to kick off new year with fitness challenge

If you're looking to lace up your sneakers and start your New Year's resolution to get in shape, here are some tips and resources to get you started.

Highlands Ranch will once again be holding its six-week Fitness Challenge. People can sign up as individuals or in pairs, and will have two sessions a week with a personal trainer, said Darci Freeman, fitness coordinator for the Highlands Ranch Community Association.

"The challenge is really focused on weight loss, similar to the Biggest Loser on TV," she said. "It is designed to kick start a fitness routine to get you started for the year."

The personal trainers will offer advice tailored to the particular person's needs, whether they are just beginning to work out or are looking for fresh ideas to perk up their routine, Freeman said.

"Consistency is the main thing, not perfection," she said. "Just a few minutes of exercise can really change your perspective on your day."

Fitness assessments will be conducted at the beginning at the end of the challenge to track participants' progress and prizes will be awarded to the top individual and the top pair.

The program started Jan. 12 and runs through Feb. 21 and is available at all the recreation center locations. People can still sign up by calling 303-471-8851. The cost is $450 for a pair, $375 for an individual.

Participants in the fitness challenge are encouraged to incorporate the group fitness classes into their routine, Freeman said. New this month is a belly dancing class.

"It's really fun, and the music is great," she said.

Another popular class is Lift & Shift, which combines cycling and weight lifting.

"It's a really great workout. It keeps triathletes and other athletes in shape during the winter months," Freeman said.

Another new feature for the rec centers in that aqua fitness classes are now being offered on a drop-in basis.

"It's more cost-effective for people, using a punch card," Freeman said. "You just show up when it's convenient for you."
